to anyone not sure if AI art is /actually/ stealing peoples art? It /totally/ is. You can sometimes see a random square of blurry nonsense in the bottom corner thats literally an amalgamation of watermarks put there my artists. On a totally different note, tho: another point that wasn't really brought up is the fact that the system feels like it'll inevitably fail. Have you even put a photo through a filter, and then put that photo into another filter, until its some unholy saturated blob trying to be a face??? While artists have been a part of society for forever, and I doubt they'll stop entirely, they HAVE been more hesitant to post their works onto wide, free-to-use public spaces (which is where the AI is taking them from), SO as the human-made art declines, and the AI art continues to be made and posted, eventually the AI is going to absorb in its own art, correct?? Cycle through that a few times and the few uncanny places within the computers art will become amplified, it will look less man-made overall. And therein lies the issue: the computer doesn't know what its doing. It's taking the keywords you put in and finding searches. If you used in the same AI on a select grouping of images with no further outreach - in which the keyword "Cow", lets say, was always followed by/connected to pictures of dogs, and then you asked it to show you cows... it'd show you dogs! Because it doesn't know the difference! It just knows what other humans know and pulls from that! So if humans stop sharing their opinions, or too many AI thoughts are added to the bunch, the machine pulls from the machine and gives itself the wrong info! I just this its really interesting that it's like... eventually going to destroy itself.
