It's an awful tradegy, but we have safe crossing zones on streets for a reason. If people choose not to use them they take their own lives in theirs hands. It doesn't help that in the darker winter months we are all wearing dark clothes! Some cyclists also.
The way I see it, if autonomous cars kill 1 where self driving kills 2, then at the very least 1 life has been saved.
