The Luddites weren't just like, blindly anti-technology. They were inteligent people who were concerned about the ways in which capitalists would use machinery in factory settings and thereby diminish their bargaining power in the workplace.
Just like the average person in industrial era Britain didn't have the funds to buy a machine loom and no control over their work once their industry was taken over - The average person today has no control over how 'AI' technologies are being rolled out, let alone the capacity to build one of their own.
