As someone who went to school for photography….that photography argument is so fucking tired
There are some valid comparisons there. Like the change from painting to photography feels alarming bc of photography feeling “real,” and how that document can change the social status quo. Paintings can beautify and tell stories, while photos are *considered* objective (but they do still have a point of view, and that’s important to remember). Now the alarm we feel from photos and video to ai that copies photos and video feels similar, but it isn’t the exact same, because paintings don’t have the same objective documentary lens. They may have been *used* that way, because that was all that was available (such as a portrait for a king to see his new bride), but I would argue that anyone intelligent in that period knew that those images were beautified and/or had their own storytelling attached. The alarm now feels larger because people view photos and videos as documents. And also, I would still argue, that people should have never been too comfortable in doing that either, because images could always be doctored, you can always crop things out, keep things out of frame, keep things in a specific context, etc. but we have lost a lot of media comprehension and the ability to ask those questions when looking at photos and video online. Very rarely do I see people in comments sections of *clear* ragebait considering why someone would post this. They just assume people are actually this stupid bc it fits their existing worldview.
Basically what I’m saying is that people will probably wise up. We had a whole culture in the 2000s online of saying “this is shopped” (photoshopped), and I anticipate that as people get sick of being duped, they will learn ways to spot ai. The biggest difference between ai and photo/video is that I barely know anyone who likes it. I know one person who embraces it, and everyone else I know is vehemently disgusted by it.
I also would gesture vaguely at nfts, and say, did very many people find value in those? Because I think that’s how generated images will be valued. The general public doesn’t value the idea if you have no craft, and the art world doesn’t value your idea if it isn’t conceptually high minded—which very little of this ai stuff is. The banana is deeper than all of this ai shit.
