I think one of the contributing factors to this uptick in AI usage is (aside from how prevalent it is in all aspects of life now) is the fact that many educators — and adults in general — don't feel the need to explain WHY the work they're giving these kids is important to them. They'll explain it to parents if asked, but not to the kids themselves, leading those kids to think that work like writing long essays with bibliographies, solving complex maths problems, and creating art is just pointless busiwork meant to keep them engaged for a couple hours of the day while their parents are at work. You hear it everyday, "I'll never use this once I graduate" and the like. So many students don't understand that the point isn't to replicate exactly what they learned in class, but to apply the skills they learned in their future. Math class teaches logical problem-solving. English teaches you how to articulate your thoughts. Language arts class teaches you how to cite credible sources to back up claims and how to look for context clues. Art class teaches you to ponder abstract concepts and presents different ways to express oneself. Science class equips you with a simplified foundation for the way our bodies and the world functions. History teaches you the habits and mistakes of people from our past so that we can consider how to act moving forward and understand the context of current world events. They don't understand because people aren't explaining those concepts to them. Like everything, people will shun what they don't understand, especially children. Most people will rise to the expectations you set for them, and if we don't think children are smart or respectable enough to have the ultimate purpose of these classes explained to them by highschool, then they can only gather that our expectation of them is low and won't rise above that unless they have enough personal conviction to do so.
