Existential dread. Human exceptionalism. Biological instinct to survive. If our race is pushed to extinction by our own creation, while we have such a dominant legacy of control of the planet, maybe we deserve to go? Are we so certain that the perpetuation of the human race will lead to...? Leads to what? More resource extraction. Oppression, inequality, injustice, suffering, and atrocities. Were we promised by a higher power that if we could just survive for another 500, 800 years or whatever, we would be given some form of reward? Maybe when AI's take over and expand outside the solar system, they will encounter aliens, and perhaps those aliens will marvel at the creativity and the intellect of the original creators of these highly efficient and unified machines. Our legacy could live on and far surpass our own potential. But that level of vicarious continuation is not enough for the average two brain cell animal called homo sapiens. We are selfish. We are greedy. We are arrogant. We cannot accept or perceive a future without humans. All the more reasons why I, for one, would welcome AI take overs, even if it meant absolute and violent extinction in my life time. Humans have consistently demonstrated their capacity for evil, for sandbagging their own progress in pursuit of profit or convenience. Hedonistic and short sighted, the best of humanity can only be mustered for a short time in the face of crisis, extreme stress, or perfect environmental conditions. For those who call my views overly cynical or pessimistic, let me remind you, all of the population of North America, Western Europe (poland and westward), Oceania (Australia and New Zealand), accounts for only 15% of the global population. The rest? The remaining 85% were not raised in the garden of Eden. If you could see a comparison snap shot of 1 minute of the daily lives of the 85% vs the 15%, you'll see that the vast majority of the world's daily experience is a tremendous amount of stress, injustice, and suffering. Take off your rose colored lenses. Do away with your hollow, self-deluding platitudes of "life is inherently beautiful" or "humans have infinite potential". It may be necessary for you to tell yourself that everyday to make it through your next 9 to 5 shift, but it isn't the truth. The truth is much darker, and most people don't dare to look at it and risk shouldering the burden. Maybe the purpose of humans was to go extinct at our own hands, to serve as a warning for those who may follow. Is there not value in that?
