Copyright and intellectual property ownership is only necessary in the ways you describe in a system built on scarcity. Currently, IP is a necessary evil to protect artists (though its efficacy is bottlenecked by the justice system, note how it takes a high profile case like Disney to really threaten these companies). If we imagine a post-scarcity world where your avenues for artistic success aren’t limited to either strained hobby or full time job, both IP ownership and stable diffusion become obsolete.
That said, this is all hypothetical. By no means do you have to hand it to Disney for protecting shareholder interests, their current position in the market is arguably just as bad for artists as any given AI company is (on a different, more structural level) but things as they are, it certainly looks like a dub. Especially if it sets a precedent that individual artists can rely on, maybe for some class action suit or something. Just don’t let it also turn into a PR dub for Disney. The enemy of my enemy is not necessarily a friend in this case.
