People need to realize that the AI hype and doom-and-gloom reports like this are most likely so prevalent because it keeps AI companies valuable. And right now, every single AI company is wildly unprofitable and it doesn't look like there is a road to profitability around the corner, despite reportings like these. LLM's are nowhere near good enough to fully replace human workers, but for anything but the most mundane tasks like rudimentary data processing. Even the most advanced frontier models still requires supervision and checks from people, because they constantly hallucinate and get things wrong. The recent job layoffs are NOT due to AI, but because there was significant over-hiring during the pandemic among tech companies. So tech companies are now, amidst a slowing market, firing "expensive" employees and replacing a lot of them with hires from abroad with H1 visas that are significantly cheaper. This practice doesn't sound good to investors, but replacing workers with AI sounds much better, even if it's a lie... It's pure gaslighting. At least for now, until they figure out how to evovle from LLM's into something that's a lot smarter.
