There was once a point that copyright/patent laws didn't exist. Peoples had a different perspective about what art and creativity were for. Things that were shared with the community became part of the community. Being able to see something you liked, and repeat it or make upgrades to it, was just a thing that made that work a part of the overall culture. When copyright/patent laws were invented, it went against how humans operate naturally. It invented an industry out of thin air by insisting that everyone behave in a way that was different than what they were easily capable of. It forced them to ignore an available resource. Years later, any large art that is absorbed by the overall culture, is made and controlled by huge wealthy corporations that rest atop the copyright/patent industry. The Disneys of the world. The ability of a single individual to contribute to the overall culture is diminished in the wash of these corporate juggernauts. Are we better off? Are people meshing as a huge culture, or are they dividing and accusing each other of things like "cultural appropriation", which is just an offshoot of copyright philosophy. Now we are seeing AI art. It examines a mountain of data that was already freely visible on the internet. It learned from images that have already been shared and were available to humans. A shrunken crummy sample image is still an image, and was still made easily available to all for free to begin with. So we sit at a crossroad about how to treat the powers of the AI. The creators of the art that had preciously shared their work for free, are now requiring a new behavior from everyone. They are making these claims that will absolutely create a new industry for them out of thin air. It won't just impact AI art, it will be rules that impact humans. it will be rules that divide culture and put the power in the hands of the rich and powerful again. The Disneys of the world that own all the original pieces, will control what can be made by people and systems that feel compelled to be inspired by it. The barrier for entry will be higher for all, and people will drift further from each other as a whole.
