The high-level problem with all this (and it's the biggest problem) is that all the companies involved in developing LLMs; from the chip makers up, don't give a shit about the outputs; usefulness or unintended effects of AI: all they care about is increasing investment; revenue and ultimately shareholder value. It's just another money machine to them and they'll keep going until they are warming their hands over the fading embers of the earth. The biggest flaw with most analyses is that critics assume that this is being developed for some reason other than making money for a tiny group of predominantly American men - there is nothing else there, but unfortunately they have lit a fuse that will be very hard to put out. The only thing I get some joy out of is that the contractors that build the "impenetrable" bunkers in New Zealand for these techlords will retreat to, will have still have the plans and will be happy to sell them or at least trade them for food...
