Hold up. That is not how I would describe the plot of 2001 at all. They are mildly dismissive of HAL, but the astronauts only start talking about it behind its back when they begin to suspect something is off. And it's strong implied that HAL's original directive from humans to make sure the mission succeeds is what makes it decide to turn against the astronauts. I rewatched this last year with a class and it honestly hits different now that we're more firmly in the era of AI. Part of that is that the setup with the "robot" is very different. In some ways it's similar to the "evil robot" trope, but 2001 is not a film using it as a metaphor for racism the way that scene in Star Wars is. It's exploring human progress and HAL is a part of that.
