Sentience and consciousness are overlapping concepts that rise out of programming for self preservation. Feelings are self justifications for our own existence. Expressions and sensory pain and pleasure are extensions of our programming for self preservation. A sentient being can be more or less conscience as it's sensory tools and cognition improve in fidelity. There is no reason AI has to be programmed to be self interested to the point that it needs complex self awareness or needs to act on this programming. We are programmed the way we are out of necessity in the resource war that was our evolutionary journey.
