Cameras and painting work in entirely different ways; photography is actually very useful and important because it allows us (or, at least, used to allow us) to confirm information through solid evidence; while painting may have been used to depict important moments in history before, it mostly served other purposes, and we know an artist's interpretation of reality will never be 100% accurate to real life, so photography and painting are both art forms, but photography also has a different purpose overall. Digital video and film are just two different techniques/formats that still allow the same people to record stuff, one is just more convenient than the other but both require you to do a lot of the same work. On the other hand, generative AI just takes a bunch of pre-existing pictures and tries to imitate them. It's not creating anything new, and instead of requiring you to do any work, you're just telling a program how to copy artists until it generates something you like and then present the result as your own, which indeed could be called "stealing". It's sort of like taking a picture of a painting and saying the painting itself was made by you, but I've never heard of anyone doing something so ridiculous. The photo itself was taken by you, using a tool (camera) developed by someone else, but the artwork depicted in the photo wasn't your own work. Similarly, an AI generated image was "generated" (prompted) by you, using an algorithm developed by someone else (in the vast majority of cases), but the "art" itself wasn't made by you; you didn't draw a single one of those pixels yourself, you didn't come up with the composition, color or lighting, you never had to think about any actual art technique, etc. I'd go as far as to say that using generative AI has an additional layer: it's like telling someone (entering a prompt) to take a photo of an artwork (generate an AI image) using a camera (algorithm) and claim that you created the artwork depicted in the photo.
