I feel like the argument of "GPT is just a word prediction system, Machine Learning is just basic maths" rings incredibly hollow as we see the increase in abilities of this basic maths and the knowledge about our own mind. Who is to say that the very basic needed building blocks for our mind arent just some very basic loops? We introduced some simple loops, called them attention, showed it the world and all of a sudden the machine can talk to us as a human would. Maybe we introduce some more loops, stick a banana up its ass and all of a sudden the simple math is still just simple math, except the math is smarter than us and has more profound goals and emotions than we could ever dream of.
