Although i am uncertain about whether or not he should be able to copyright an AI generated image, i dont think the argument "it wasnt created with actual art tools hence it doesnt count" is valid. Art can be and is created with everything. People stack bricks in a certain way, use photoshop, break glass, use digital software, or use their body to paint with. What is art and what not lies purely in the eyes of the observer. There is no right or wrong way to go about it. It is entirely contextual.
Also about the topic of "AI generated imagery is stolen". Im not sure i agree with that one either. AI draws on existing information from its database to create sth new. In the end, that is extremely similar to what real artists do. They see other peoples work, get inspiration and mix it with other impressions until they create a "unique" art piece. AI does the same, just infinitely faster.
Still, does that devalue AI imagery? No idea.
