Please remember that geoffrey hinton is a materialist / statistical scientist. His views on the world comes with a lot of assumptions about the nature of reality, assumptions which nobody in a practical sense concretely understands and remains far from settled. Not even to mention the complexity of mind and intelligence itself.
Reality is far more than mere material, and has been proven time and time again.. His views on consciousness and intelligence are fundamentally limited and obscure, resting on assumptions, and his reductionist perspective overlooks essential aspects of sentience. Consciousness (or simply experiencing reality) is not the same as a hive mind of interconnected computing patterns like AI.
That said, I do agree with some of his concerns about the potential impact AI could have on society- giving us even more reason to be cautious and intentional in how we develop and secure these technologies.
