There is no stopping progress unfortunately. This tech is going to continue to grow, and fill the industry more and more. It will be a long while before it fills every corner though. Right now its limited to routes where the truck can go from one terminal to another. This is simply because the truck needs to be inspected before and after each trip. Yea, you can throw sensors on the truck to mitigate and let the computers inspect the truck. Problem is, the more sensors you put on, the more expensive it will make the truck. Meaning that companies will end up at a middle ground where there are sensors for the most important parts, but the truck won't be covered in sensors to monitor everything there is. It's going to be a long while before these driverless trucks actually get into OTR going anywhere. Mainly because the infrastructure doesn't exist to inspect all the trucks that are on the road. There aren't enough DOT agents to pull in every truck that comes through a weigh station to inspect them. Truck stops won't want to hire enough people to effectively inspect trucks. Shippers are going to be reluctant to take on the responsibility that comes with having their people inspect/secure trucks and loads and saying "Yes, this is safe for the roads". Honestly, those of you who support this tech shouldn't. Because once it expands enough, you're going to have people who are being paid bottom dollar inspecting these trucks. People who don't get paid enough to do the job right, and have to rush their inspection to inspect the next truck. People who want to cut corners inspecting and securing loads. People who's job it is to just do this one task and once the truck leaves it is "no longer their problem". Sure, we have drivers that are like that now. Imagine though, trucks coming out of a steel mill hauling steel coils that weigh 35-40k lbs, secured by someone that is part of a skeleton crew rushing to "secure" the load to move on to the next and not caring about if the load will fall off going down the road. These people are working on every truck that comes through the mill. So instead of you having 3-5 trucks of shitty drivers leaving the mill, you have 50+ trucks a day leaving the mill with half assed securement. Anyone that is a truck driver now. If you want to continue being a truck driver, you need to start working your way into more niche areas of the industry. Into specialized freight. Cause this tech will first fill out local freight, then inevitably expand into OTR refer/dryvan and general freight. There will still be some areas that this tech won't be able to get a foothold in. Areas like superloads, but it will eventually make its way into some oversized. The truck driver will never completely disappear, but the amount of drivers will decrease.
