I think we need to acknowledge that most people actually love Suno. Those often-quoted numbers like “79% of musicians are against AI” usually refer to professional session musicians who make their living from studio work. That’s a very specific group. If we’re talking about music lovers in general, I’d honestly estimate that around 80% enjoy tools like Suno, because they care more about the result than the process. Throughout history, every new technology has been met with claims that “everything was better before,” and there are always people working hard to slow down or stop progress. That’s nothing new. I’ve written and released many songs long before Suno existed, and personally I don’t see AI music as something that will ruin me or destroy my catalog. For major labels, however, AI represents a potential loss of market share, which means lost revenue. In that situation, it’s convenient to point the finger at technology. If humans hadn’t learned by absorbing and building on historical knowledge, progress wouldn’t exist at all. From that perspective, the fair use argument makes sense to me. Modern hit songwriting already relies heavily on borrowing ideas. That’s exactly why you often see 5 to 12 writers credited on a single song, it’s usually the result of taking bits and pieces from older hits and reworking them.
