I don’t think Telegram or AI is the problem. I think Deepfake is the ai that is used to produce these fake images which are often for the wrong reasons so I can’t say about that, but the main problem is and always will be misogyny and patriarchy. I’m old enough to have seen the pre-internet era and girls were being hounded by their faces from photographs being cut off, pasted onto the faces of adult magazines photo models and blackmailed the same way. When Internet was new (pre-smartphone era), Adobe was still around and perpetrators were using that to produce bad images of people. Smartphone era came and I think I’ve seen Facebook go through two different durations of promoting female users to not post or upload their faces (photos that show their faces) on Facebook. Third time came and they kinda just took away the option to download other people’s uploaded pfp. Not all their pictures. Just their profile picture can’t be downloaded. It was a bandaid on a bulletin wound. Same thing happened twice on Instagram and the second time around, they made it so that (past Instagram collab with Meta, I think) you can’t screenshot a person’s pfp or the pictures they have uploaded on their feed. But that’s gone now too. In the last few decades, the mediums have changed time and time again, but the crime and response has remained the same: blame the victim, give a slap on the wrist to the perpetrator and if possible, take away the victim’s independence and security and opportunity in the name of ‘safety’. The terror that women live through remains the same through all these years. It’s not the medium.
