As an amateur digital artist (self taught since 2018), I was extremely against the AI movement to begin when I got wind of it last year though not having seen any works whatsoever. It was near impossible to consider it an art form when there is no human touch to it. Out of curiosity however, I started experimenting with it last month and got the sense of the ethical issues that cropped up before watching this video. The shock came when I happened to stumble on an AI work with the prompt of wlop's style, and this was just stealing in plain view.
I believe the seriousness and violation is applied if any artist's name is typed in the prompt, because that's when the style is explicitly incorporated into the generated artwork. Personally I don't see an issue if general descriptions and keywords are used to describe what it is the user wants to create, because the end result doesn't actually resemble any particular artist's style unless specified. But of course not everyone would refrain from using an artist's name, more so if they are well known in the art world. Most of the artworks you see have the likeness of stock images, or rather, there's nothing natural about it despite the quality. They lack the human touch and it inevitably makes human works more valuable. Putting aside the present issues, I don't actually believe AI can completely replace creations that require soul being put into it, not just art. It'll be like how we view the old masters' paintings in this modern age, where it can't be reproduced.
The toxicity and apathy in the video is much more severe than I anticipated with no respect and regard to artists who've spent a lot of time honing their crafts, and since this is the early stages of AI, the system is flawed. What they should've done to begin with is block/censor artists' names to prevent it from being used as a prompt, or at this point, to financially compensate artists whose works have been replicated based from the stats because there's no way for the data to be unlearned.
An opportunity could be possible for artists to earn if they choose to opt in for their art be used as data collection. At least, that would be a fair exchange. Because from the way I see it now, it's no different to how our personal data is taken and sold somewhere whenever we go on the internet and not being able to do anything about it.
I can't deny the immense fascination that came having seen works created from a few words. As someone who has limited skills and only the imagination, I saw these AI programs as another tool to bring my visions to life, despite the final outcome not being 100% accurate to what I see. I think this is the same for many who lack or has no art skills at all, but there should an ethical way to produce creations without directly lumping artists' names into the database.
