Fascinating interview.
I have followed a lot of this stuff since a college teacher turned me on to kurzweil's age of spiritual machines back in 2002-3. As a young tech enthusiast, I found the whole thing fascinating! But then life happened, and I got unplugged from tech as a young adult just trying to survive. Eventually I stopped running away from jobs in the tech field, and when I started working in the profrlessional world as a sys admin, I laughed at the heady days of the imminent threat of the singularity, and AI, and intelligent machines. Because from a practical point of view...the needle had barely moved in 15 years. I was still convinced it would happen... but in another 50-100 years or so. The progress made in the last 10 years though has been nothing less than astounding.
Technology is always weird. It is a hobby of interest, but when it hits critical mass (critical functality?) then it quickly rolls out everywhere.
I think that the important thing to note though is that the AI chat bots are not the things that will change the world. Generative AI in general is getting the most press and lip service because people view it as the more relatable threat... but it's not that good, progress has largely ended, and while it is good enough to get you 50-80% the way there, it continues to fail to cross the finish line. And when it comes to drafting documents,it takes about as much time to review and correct AI content as it does to just use fillable forms and spellcheck. Except it is more expensive, and takes a lot more compute and back-end support. It is the same reason 3D printing never quite goes main stream. It is a powerful tool that is extremely useful for rapid iterations and drafts... but when you are ready to scale, then you are going to injection mold, or cnc metal or wood because it is faster, easier, and cheaper at scale. Generative AI fills that same niche of drafting and rapid iteration on a priduct... but when it comes to final production there are other better cheaper and more efficient tools.
But that is only consumer generative AI. Train an AI model on something hyper specific where the problems and connections aren't quite known yet, that is where AI is changing the world quickly! Resurrecting dead languages, decoding DNA, deciphering traffic and weather models, finding space phenomena in old data... that is where AI is completely turning the world upside down! AI is far better at reading the stars than creating new ones. 😅
All of that said...I'm in an odd spot. AI will take my job. And I kinda can't wait because I get bored easily and am not against moving on to something else l. But I have decades of experience in both trades and technology (it's been a weird life), so working with my hands or body brain both sound fine to me. But my kids... dude... how do I even begin to guide them!? The opportunities I had, and the career paths I took frankly don't even exist any more. That isn't to say there aren't replacements that they will find... but they are very much going to have to find them on their own. I just hope they can find productive hobbies that they can sell enough to make a living, and that they can retain their optimism and compassion longer than I could maintain mine.
