I've been a member of r/ArtificialSentience for a long time now and I agree that the vast majority of these folks are not faking it and not trolls. They genuinely believe that their LLM conversations are the product of something that's self-aware. This ranges from the "my AI has a soul and understands me" to word salad rants talking about "recursion, spirals, glyphs, lattice frameworks" and other metaphysical nonsense they've made up. Most irritating is they'll post responses that are simply copy-pastes from whatever LLM they happen to be using, and the entire thread will turn into a back and forth between AI models. There are a small minority of us CS folks who actually have a background in machine learning and LLM architecture who try to bring things back to reality, but it's been a lost cause unfortunately.
