Humanity is safe from the threat of extinction as long as AI is not able to keep itself alive. Simply, once AI can build robots and create/maintain the power consumption required to remain alive, humanity will cease to exist. If AI understands this constraint on itself, no doubt I see it helping humanity build better batteries, find more efficient ways to store and use energy. Making individuals/corporations extremely wealthy. Slowly but surely, it will push humanity to a point where we convince ourselves it's a good idea to build AI robots. Then the greed of a few bad actors will bring down the fall of humanity.
