You explained the technology well enough but It's really not fair to equate Waymo and Tesla the way you do here. They are significantly different and their safety records are like night and day. Tesla FSD is a fraud because it's not autonomous as they claim. Tesla's current technology (cameras only) cannot ever be allowed to operate without close human supervision. They can't even drive reliably in fog, shadows or direct sunlight. Teslas used to have radar as well, which significantly improves accuracy but Elon got rid if it because he said it was too expensive. They are half-lying about operating without a safety driver "inside" the car in Austin. They are following the car with a human supervisor in a chase car. They're not even attempting to prove their technology to regulators. They're just putting on a stunt for their gullible investors.
And to say "no one ever asked for" autonomous cars... Really? A lot of us have been dreaming of it for a very long time. It's a reality now. If anyone fears legit autonomous cars on the roads, go to a city served by Waymo and take a ride. You'll probably change your mind pretty quick.
