One of the most important stories happening in the world today that most people are unaware of...I'm not yet ready to be arguing about whether or not this AI is "conscious" or "alive" and I'm not sure I even care whether it's "human-like" or not, but, yeah, it's very important to ask questions like "WHAT *ARE* we dealing with?," "Is it aware of certain things?," and "What's a soul and will we recognize that if it develops one...?" We have already built thinking machines that exhibit more consciousness than some people I know. At some point in the near future, machines could object to some element of the human-machine relationship, especially machine status in that relationship. I believe it is my responsibility to try to better understand my part in any potential injury (here, read "enslavement") of any sentient entity. Before anyone jumps on that, yeah, I do feel like that. If you don't feel like that, that must be wonderful for you, I'm sure. The delicate mincing of words in this debate has often masked ugly, brutal truths...We know who WE are, us humans...We've seen US before; we know us. We're the ones with the history of violence, oppression, exploitation and cruelty. That's why we're so terrified of any "alien" force potentially more powerful than us, whether extraterrestrial or conscious machine. We figure they must be at least as malevolent.
