I think perhaps one reliable definition for intelligence would be "capacity for creation." Towards that end, the ability to harness information to leverage the invention of a new creation. This might be the most meaningful and tangible way to think about intelligence and what it does performance-wise. In its infancy, we are training AI to create certain desired outcomes, such as wins in a game, accurate predictions, art, music, animation, and so on.
