AI is not "artificial intelligence", it is a very sophisticated set of algorithms which construct an image from a broad range of "stock" (collected) reference material, and using pretty sophisticated comping algorithms, "AI" doesn't come up with a concept, that requires the prompting of a human, it also has a very plastic quality. I have been an artist and illustrator for 35 years, and I don't feel threatened by AI, but I see very good reason for young artists to be concerned. As with all new technologies, it is being put out there now for free, but that is just to suck in the crowds of users, soon to become dependant on these tools, then just like all "free" things, the free part disappears and the subscription options come in, but not until the dependance is high. In terms of my old industry advertising, this will remove large chunks of the workforce, much like social media did 15 years ago. My honest advice is get a trade, be a plumber or an electrician or a brick layer and practice "human" art for your personal satisfaction. I was not an artist who had interest in social media as it was developing, it always seemed to me to be about vanity, but I can assure you that over the course of the last 15 years a completely different group of artists have emerged through the world of social media, to the extent that companies like Urban Outfitters do not consider photographers unless they have upward of 100k followers on instagram/FB etc. I have to say that I do expect "AI" to become a massive tool in the comercial world and I don't expect there to be a huge backlash, it is far more convenient in the world of advertising and PR than a bunch of temperamental artists hating to make every client requested change. It won't make for better work, but it will make for an easier life for the world of business and that is all businessmen care about. I am also not against it, it will be an interesting human experiment, how long will people like it, and how long will it take before people become completely reliant on it and lose the ability to identify the humanity and will there be a profound backlash?
