If we lived in a functioning democracy, then this would be cause for celebration: if AI eliminates half of all jobs, that means everyone should be doing half as much labor, each! We could institute a 20~24 hour work week as standard across the country instead of 40 hours. Your daily work requirements could be 4 hours a day for 5 days a week, or 8 hours a day 2~3 days a week. And we'd be paid the same for those hours as we are currently paid for 40/week. But that's not how they designed this system to work. Whenever a new technology revolutionizes productivity, we never stand to gain from it. Whenever a booming industry sees tons of growth, we get scraps. The people do not benefit from the reaping of value from every resource available - the rich get it all. This is fundamentally a broken system and we are all about to pay for that system to keep going without us. We'll be kicked to the side when we're no longer needed under an outdated 40 hour work week standard. Hell, if the current administration has its way, the idea of 40 hours as a standard might very well disappear, too. Might as well consolidate even more of those jobs and leave the only people making money forced to do 60+ hours without overtime. This is what businesses want. It makes them more money, it makes more money for the investor class, and that's all that matters to the people in charge. America is being run like a business, and this is how you run a business. Brutal, cutthroat, no care for the people beneath you. As long as the owners get what they want out of it, it doesn't matter if the business is emptied of all value, stripmined and discarded, a mere husk of what it once was. That will be America, if we keep going down this path.
