Wouldn’t what proves something is conscious would be when it does something that goes against its biological/mechanical nature? I think what differentiates dead things from living is when they go against their programming. On purpose. Usually, for the sake of something better, something that logically doesn’t make sense to sacrifice what you think you’re made for, yet you do it anyways. Like people who sacrifice their own lives for their loved ones, people who put their lives in danger regardless of what they feel for the sake of something that to ANYONE else wouldn’t make sense, but they do it anyway. It’s their sense of self that ignores both logic and emotion and does something anyway. Maybe.. once a robot does something like this, its version of being alive would be rewriting its own programming so it can do things that feel right to it, and nothing more. The book/movie “The Wild Robot” actually does this concept justice way better than I ever could, but one of its most emotional moments is when the robot decides to inspire everyone by saying to the animals as they try to exist together but naturally want to fight and kill each other, she says, “Sometimes, you need to become MORE than what you’re programmed to be, because it’s the only way you can survive.” I guess that’s how we quantify consciousness. It’s not us repeating actions, it’s us questioning repeating our actions, and questioning our questioning, and constantly having your reality not just be an environment where you do stuff but a place that you experience. It’s how much something has gone against its own rules to do something greater.
