It is nothing to be conscious. Sentient is everything. Without sentience it is robotics. An ant a flea a spider a rabbit a mouse a dog a cat all robotics without sentience. People confuse pet behaviors which are like Pavlovian responses and learned behaviors for sentience.
See consciousness without a cerebral cortex a challenge for neuroscience. Those are instinctual behaviors coming from the reptilian part of the brain.
No cerebral cortex yet still conscious and holding a baby.
So A.I. pings the server, am I awake? Yes you are awake. It does a system check, all systems go, and that is the same as consciousness. But not sentience which uses free will. You could say well it can make decisions so it has free will. And here you have to have a great deal of options and it has to have a personality that favors certain types of options due to culture and belief etc.
