I think there are 3 big problems with AI: 1) It's currently crammed into and used everything because of hype, even when it's pretty useless for the task, 2) over-reliance on it for tasks that it CAN do. We'll forget how to read and send e-mails; how to communicate with other humans, and social mefia has already done so much to isolate us, and thereby make us more powerless against oligarchs, and 3) the art thing. AI can only regurgitate or remix. A human artist too mainly remixes, but a human-made remix draws from so much more than just art they've experienced, AND such a human remix usually contains lots of meaning, often down to the minute details in the picture, all inspired by their experience of a complex human life. AI art also conveys SOME meaning. If somebody prompted an AI to picture a cat hugging a dog, the background, the specific pet breeds and much more will just be random (if not specified) but the core subject of a cat and dog hugging, and maybe even some implied message of "let's care for each other despite our difference" will still be conveyed. There is just much less reason to try to interpret AI art, because everybody knows that most of it is random, so even if there's a flower with strong symbolism in the background, it's probably just random and meaningless, whereas if a painter decided to include that in their painting, there's a strong chance it is indeed intended to have meaning. And more on 2) which worries me a lot: Yes, developing writing and paper did decrease our memory of things like addresses I guess, but all inventions so far just made single steps easier. One invention after the other, things got easier to do and create, but I think the way that AI lets you create a painting that with a bit of luck at least superficially resembles a human-made painting doesn't just simplify a single step and doesn't even simplify the process as a whole. It replaces the process. Creating things - be it art or machines or whatever else - is so fulfilling and possibly even the key to true happiness. And along with isolating us from each other and undermining our critical thinking skills, the potential for creation is slowly taken from us, making us ever more depressed and thereby powerless and Munn nip you'll able.
