While I appreciate Neil deGrasse Tyson’s optimism, the idea that AI won’t replace more jobs than it creates is rooted in what's known as compensation theory (an economic belief dating back to the 19th century). It holds that technological disruptions eliminate some jobs but ultimately lead to new ones through increased demand, productivity, and new industries.
However, this theory assumes a kind of balance that may no longer hold in the age of AI. Unlike past technologies that automated physical labor and created parallel industries, AI threatens to automate not just tasks, but entire "types of thinking", across sectors simultaneously. One should question whether our societal structures, education systems, and labor markets are prepared for a scenario where no equivalent new jobs emerge for many displaced workers.
In short, the problem today isn't just job transformation, it's "mass redundancy without meaningful reintegration" (this thought comes from the German philosopher Richard David Precht). That’s a qualitative shift from previous industrial revolutions, and it deserves deeper reflection than historical patterns alone can offer.
