I agree with the concern but it’s becoming more and more obvious that government regulations are not to protect people but to enrich political constituents and control populations. Just like the “regulated” gain of function research, if the gov regulated AI the would just do the worst fears behind closed doors then unleash it on the population. They probably want it unregulated to cause the most damage and instability anyways. Who at this point thinks that the government is on their peoples side?
