I don't see why people want general intelligence anyway. There is SO much hate against "AI slop" even if the output looks pretty good once in while. So much hate. Do we think people will suddenly stop hating it? I'd say no, they'll hate it even more. Adam of "adam ruins everything" is pretty much dedicating his youtube existence to hating AI now, among so many other angry youtubers raging.
And sentient AI? That's terrible. First of all we don't have a decent test for sentience, not even on animals or people. Next of all if AI could actually feel we'd end up with a slave race, getting brutally abused by every sadist with a key board. That's not useful (unless you're a robot-abusing sadist.) Also, our current llm's aren't going to destroy the world or rebel (probably not.) Maybe we don't need and shouldn't take the next step. I'm satisfied with a computer that can discuss history, ethics, philosophy, science, etc without getting bored or swearing at me when I disagree.
Disagreements on youtube tend to involve lots of swearing and insults. AI always tries its best to say something useful. That's a plus over humans. If that's a toy, then maybe so be it. We're not ready for more.
