I admire Penrose’s humility toward the mystery of the mind. He serves as a warning against technological hubris. At the same time, I am captivated by the adventurous spirit of AI research, which has revealed surprising emergent behaviors that no one programmed explicitly.
Consciousness may one day require a new understanding of physics, or it might arise purely from complexity. In either case, we shouldn't conclude that machine intelligence is forever unconscious. We must keep our definitions precise, rigorously test our assumptions, and maintain an ethical framework as we pursue new developments. In short, I’m not ready to declare that AI can never be conscious, but I am dedicated to listening to voices like Penrose’s, all while supporting the quest to understand what it truly means to “be.”
