I'm completely blown away at the sexual harassment/assault stats on Lyft (and I assume Uber is similar)! I always assumed the cases I heard about were very rare exceptions. While I am aware that the risk is exteremly low for any given ride, I am still really troubled by that. And by the fact that the real numbers are probably much greater as many/most very likely go unreported.
Back to to the self-driving taxi argument, I agree that it's not a solution. At best it is a transitional technology that can help ease more city dwellers away from car ownership while mass transit infrastructure (and cycling infrastructure) is slowly being built out. And I get that living independently in most of the LA metro area very much requires a car today. Hopefully that will change in coming decades. I just enjoyed my first trip to NYC last fall and it was amazing to be able to get around in that city and surrounding areas without even considering the idea of renting a car. I did take a couple of Lyft rides late at night to get out to Astoria where I was staying when I found myself in Manhatten after midnight, but that was it. I hope this freedom from cars comes to all cities some day.
