Yesterday I was manually driving my Tesla Y on a 3 lane residential road in the outside curb lane the center lane had cars but they were back aways. I have been brushing up on driving skills by watching my Tesla drive because it seems to follow traffic rules closely and I have noted the car prefers the center lane when possible leaving the outside lanes for passing cars and cars preparing to exit the road left or right. Thinking the center lane was clear I signaled and steered into the center lane. A large black SUV in the left lane was further back accelerated into the center I was attempting to merge into into it. My car “saw” the black SUV accelerating and approaching as it merged into the middle lane off my left shoulder. My car immediately took automatic control and dove back into the right lane I had just vacated avoiding a collision with the approaching SUV. I have been experimenting with the autopilot and it is gaining my trust more and more everyday. I am a retired airline and military pilot familiar with autopilots in aircraft. This background may explain my willing acceptance of the autopilot in my Tesla y.
