My rbother explained it like a person in a room with a two way printer that prints chinese. I don't know what these funny little pictures mean, ubut I sure am having fun with this puzzle game, & oh it gets more complicated, I need to consider all of the symbols at once, not just what symobl is most likely to come after the last one. Eventually it sends you a couple symbols & you reply back. "Do you speak chinese?" it asks. "Yes, I do," you reply, not knowing that is what you said. You don't understand what the printer is saying, you just know from context what to spit back. If someoen were to ask you "do you speak chinese?" you would say "no where did you get that idea?" & they would be confused because you "speak" chinese all the time with the printer, but even though you can say all these things that are perfectly intelligent, logical, & even correct, you don't undersatnd any of it. (one could argue that if it is correct, it doesn't need an understanding.) This example is actually sort of bad though because chinese is really hard for LLMs to make sense of.
