I want to give Hasan a big shoutout for his effort to make the discussion about AI as political as it deserves to be. It’s honestly refreshing, and necessary, to see someone grounding this topic in material and political reality. It’s unfortunate, though, to see so many brilliant minds approach it with such shallow or depoliticized analyses. I deeply admire Neil for his incredible communication skills and pedagogical approach to the universe and physics, which make these subjects more accessible and “democratic” to the general public. However, it’s deeply concerning, and I’d argue unscientific, to build an entire understanding of something as complex as AI or science itself on personal moral compasses and individualistic values. Doing so promotes the dangerously naïve idea that science is inherently positive, existing in some neutral, benevolent vacuum detached from the exploitative, biased, and unjust systems that shape it. I wish science could truly be “from the people, for the people,” but that’s simply not the reality we live in. This isn’t about rejecting science or denying its fundamental importance to human progress, since its contributions are undeniable. What’s troubling is the persistent tendency to romanticize science as impartial and benevolent, focusing only on its achievements while ignoring the harm it has historically caused and, in many cases, continues to perpetuate. Are we just going to overlook the fact that science itself played a central role in constructing and legitimizing racism, colonialism, and eugenics? For centuries, so-called “scientific” institutions measured, experimented on, and dehumanized Black and Indigenous peoples to “prove” their inferiority. These weren’t fringe practice, they were mainstream, institutionalized science. And the effects of that legacy are still being felt today, as poor, racialized, and marginalized communities continue to bear the brunt of systemic inequalities that science once helped to justify. Like every other human endeavor, scientific inquiry is shaped by the values, ideologies, and material conditions of its political moment. To discuss it without that critical, materialist lens isn’t just naïve, it’s fundamentally dishonest.
