In 1990 I wrote a version of the TRAVESTY program for statistical text generation. It talked to me and seemed to be smart, for about 10 minutes. Over the past few years I spent time talking to LLMs, which are basically souped-up TRAVESTY programs fed with the Internet. The subjective illusion of intelligence lasts longer each year. It has exceeded a lot of these people's critical ability. What concerns me is that it's an automatic BS salesman that sells itself, and it's succeeding, and so it will sell anything to anyone, including the path to the destruction of all humanity.
