The writing in NaNo’s statement is bad, which is interesting coming from a group centered around writing. It’s not just grammar or tone: it’s clarity. It feels as though in different sections of the statement they are defending different uses of AI in writing without specifying, leaving the reader to intuit that they are defending the most egregious use of ai for writing—generating the manuscript itself—throughout the whole thing.
To me, it appears that in the classism section they are defending editing with ai, which is seen as slightly more acceptable by some writers, and they may have been able to salvage some of their tone problems by being clearer. That does nothing to save the horrendous attitude of the piece. The ableism section was clearly not researched or looked at by another writer critically, and ruins the writer’s ethos.
Criticism of Ai writing and classism, ableism, and racism are just not comparable. Apples and oranges. They picked an aggressive, shockbait tactic and it shows in the quality of their work.
