I don't think they were being deliberately dishonest, I just think they misunderstood what you were saying. To them it's plain as day that any art style can be copied by AI as it's all just data. This is a fact. The disconnect was in what you were trying to achieve as opposed to what they thought you were trying to achieve. They thought you were protecting your art style, which you weren't. Nightshade doesn't really work that way and requires such a large number of participants because the effect gets diluted. So right now it's going to seem as though nothing is happening, but the next time a major training run is done for an image gen AI the results will actually surface. Until we see the effects from widespread adoption of the nightshade technique it's going to look like all your efforts are silly or in vein as people will be copying artists in the meantime with no real trouble. So really you're both right. You're just talking past each other. They aren't naive to how image gen AI work and to date there hasn't been a single style that has been sufficiently protected against AI. So you just end up looking like you're rage baiting, and they end up looking like a-holes who don't know what they're talking about. I'm hopeful there's a light at the end of this tunnel, but I just don't see it. There's no law of physics that prevents your art from being copied or anyone's for that matter. The only real defense is legal. Even if artists win the long standing legal battle there will be an enormous uphill battle to enforce said laws. Sure major companies will end up too scared to use AI for fear of being sued (that would be awesome) but just like with piracy, you'll see random people infringing on your work online all the time and there won't be much you can do about it. YouTube still to this day struggles with this despite having the most sophisticated copyright infringement detection system on the planet. We would have to force ID verification on everyone that uses social media to maintain enforcement of copyright protections via legal repercussions. As we've seen with recent laws, everyone basically agrees that's a bridge too far. I just hate the way the world has become. The rich steal from us while simultaneously taking away our ownership rights. Everything is a subscription now. AI is polluting our social spaces and turning everyone stupid. Maybe this is the wake up call. Maybe fighting back is the only way forward. Like anti AI gorilla warfare. We don't just need AI poison, we need a vaccine. Someone should start an AI vaccine initiative. Make the business of data collection and cleaning so cost prohibitive that no one even tries. Even if this pops the AI bubble and the economy crashes, at least it'll send them a strong message.
