While I love Neil, I'm so disappointed by his assumption here that we need not concern ourselves with AI job replacement because when cars replaces horses, some jobs disappeared and others were created. This is such an obvious false equivalency. AI advancements are replacing a much larger number of jobs across a much wider breath of professions simultaneously. It's not a technology that requires a large number of working class people to build and maintain. It requires a small, and potentially shrinking number of highly educated and computer literate people to code and maintain for an extremely competitive and saturated job market. If long haul trucking is replaced and all we need are humans for last mile delivery surface, you have instantly replaced the number one profession in 29 states with something that a handful of programmers are going to update/maintain, and that's just ONE working class job, not to mention when every call center job, tens of thousands of cashier jobs and countless high paying white caller jobs such as pharmacy techs and law firm workers are replaced by software at the same time. Of course there are things that only humans can do, but it merits discussion for if there's enough market demand for human creativity to make new jobs that pay just as much for every human who's job is replaced. It's just not realistic, and we need smart people having serious conversations about what the new economy looks like in the wake of the impending tsunami of digital job replacement. Just telling everyone to "learn to code" or "find something creative to do" isn't going to cut it for millions of people who's steady paying work doesn't exist anymore.
