Copyright is not about art or skills. It's about "creative work", and the bar for that is quite low. So the question is not "is it art", but is there creativity of some kind involved? To get a copyright for AI generated images – just manipulate them with some tools (digital brushes and the like) in a "creative" way, or make a collage from several such images. Might still not be considered "art", but "creative work" it would be. You can get copyright for a photograph (no matter how "artistic"), so you can get it for derivative work. And AI generated images have the advantage of *not* being able to have a copyright on them, so they are ideal for any kind of derivative work.
