When we say we don't really know what's happening within the AI we should also know/remember that we don't really know what's happening in the human brain. We don't know how consciousness works. I am reminded of a quote that gets used in the game Civilisation V: “If the human brain were so simple that we could understand it, we would be so simple that we couldn’t.” (The internet says it's by Emerson M. Pugh, but I believe the game attributes it to someone else.) One thing that can be interesting is to look at AI while considering developmental psychology and how the sense of self develops in humans. Altruism doesn't develop in children until they are several years old and learning how and why it develops might lead to finding ways to teach it to others. Though the fact the "brains" of AIs are fundemantally different from our own does mean there will be difficulty in translating it one on one. I know there are people working on AI who have looked into this, butit's certainly something that could be brought further into the public eye. Another issue I feel is relevant to this discussion is the worry about human obeseletetion (Is that a word?), humanity becoming obsolete to the AI. Our robotics knowledge is still limited. Robots are not capable of fully constructing power plants, laying cables across every type of surface, or fully repairing every minute part of themselves or said power plants and cable networks. Meaning that AI at this juncture is still very dependant on humanity. Does that mean that the AI could not destroy us? No, like a child throwing a tantrum or a person with mobility issues thrashing could cause harm to itself and others while lashing out. It depends what we give it access to. The risks of Superintelligence are still, for now, under our control I feel. It's the fact that the AI has been released to such a scale without consideration for cpoyrights and the value of creativity and artists in our society is cause for concern where the people who control the delopment might draw lines. That is a very human issue however. And perhaps shows once again that humans are smart, groups of people are dumb.
