I’m not saying I’m for AI art necessarily, but those arguments are all circumstantial/temporary. If we’re gonna take an art stealing approach to limiting AI then the only competent AI art programs are gonna be the ones trained by large corporations with the resources and catalogue to train them on. Though there’s probably enough open source material to make something somewhat competent too as AI progresses. On it being ugly, that’s on a case by case basis. I’ve seen extremely detailed AI images where the only mistakes are slight smudges in the fine detail of repetitive patterns that you really have to get in close to notice. Though, most AI images are pretty trashy still, I think. I don’t really value AI art. I appreciate art for the skill and effort put into creating it as well as its entertainment value, I suppose, but AI art is getting closer and closer to entertainment/aesthetic competency, but the lack of effort is almost always going to be self evident. I’m scared for the day that I won’t be able to tell without corroborating evidence that something was made with skill and effort, but I’m also not a big fan of limiting AI because all the proposed solutions I’ve heard give more power to large entities while taking it from the individual. I’m not necessarily against AI restrictions either, I just feel like nobodies taking a measured look at AI. There are either those weird, crazy prompt creators that call themselves artist or individuals who Harold the destruction of AI on anecdotal reasoning that you can’t really apply universally and that definetely doesn’t need to apply to AI in the long term. It feels so weird seeing people so split on this issue. I don’t think ever ever heard a single person take a middling stance on AI and all the attacks I’ve heard just feel like parroted talking point. How is this such a polarizing issue? Maybe the people who would have a middling stance don’t care enough to join the discussion. I don’t know. I don’t really care about AI much myself. I kind of want to delve into art one of these days. I’ve done some semi-decent still-life’s, but someday I’d like to draw without a reference and maybe make some characters or even short animations. I’m kind of busy finding a job at the moment though. If AI art didn’t exist it wouldn’t bother me one bit, but since it does I feel like keeping it accessible instead of centralizing it’s use should be our goal on some level.
