Even thought this is partly to do with protecting the work of the artist, I feel it goes a lot deeper than that, sooner or later, we're going to get A.I. models that doesn't infringe on copyrighted work, but artist will still scream blue murder about it.
So even thought I'm sure there is some art theft going on, I don't think this is the real complaint, I think the real issue artist have is that A.I. is becoming a competitor, and because of the sheer scale of art that can be done with A.I. on pretty much anything and by anyone, that is bound to devalue the work of human artist.
No offence to artist, but if I could generate art by other means, do it a lot quicker and cheaper, I would be crazy to not take that up, and anything that improves productivity, usually always wins.
This is a battle that I don't think the creative industry is going to win, whether that be art, music, storytelling and so on, and if I was an artist, I would try to incorporate A.I. into my workflow and see how society pans out with A.I. and human art, but honestly, I would likely look for a different career path, because A.I. is very likely going to downgrade the value of art and a lot of other creative work, except for a handful of unique creative people, most will likely get replaced by A.I. because it's faster, cheaper and more productive.
A.I. is a disruptive technology, there are always going to be winners and losers, and we should remember that this is only just getting started, A.I. over the coming years and decades is likely going to get a lot better, which is going to make it more of a threat to a lot more jobs.
The sad truth is, we've seen this play out countless times throughout history, anything that makes humans more productive, usually wins out and it's likely that A.I. is going to be a threat to a lot of jobs over the next few decades, but anything that makes us more productive, can lift living standards, in the case of A.I. we could be talking about a revolution in improvements in the quality of life for us all, but it's also going to turn the world upside down, putting a lot of us out of work, but in any case, the cat is out of the bag, there's no going back, and we have to adapt to this new reality.
But let me ask you a question, if you're a company, what incentive do you have in employing the work of an artist when you could use A.I. to get the job done far faster and cheaper? Business is all about cutting cost, and human labour is a cost, and say I was creating a game, all of a sudden, I can reduce my cost a lot by having far fewer people working on the art, this is likely going to be the case for music, storytelling and countless other things and will bump up human productivity a lot.
But in any event, artist can still create art as a hobby, they can even try to sell it, but I suspect the value of their art is likely going to go down a lot, with the exception of a handful of unique artist.
