Maybe this is just the next grand stage of life/intelligence in the universe. First there are some lifeless rocks (planets), some of them spawn some microbes whose job it is to eventually mature to the point that they can build the necessary structures for "AI" as the microbes call it. After this is done, the planet becomes a single unit of intelligence, forming something analgous to neurons. Once enough of these units start communicating, a galactic intelligence wakes up.
