Copyright is incredibly arbitrary, and it needs to be ended entirely, especially with AI around potentially giving all the power over a very few people who can run models to generate a ton of things and then "own" it. Property is rooted in scarcity. Copyright is a state privilege which corrupts social institutions and culture. It isn't very useful for those at the bottom. It is most useful to those who can leverage the legal system. This might be your employer, so you can get paid more by them, but with AI, they can potentially flip the script and get rid of you. The models aren't good enough to do that yet, but who knows where it is going.
I'm not saying it will get there fast. I don't know. But I am saying AI is a force for centralization as long as it's buttressed with any form of state privilege. Open models are the best path forward, but they create all sorts of enforcement problems, like people creating things similar to what you have created and then using that to asset that state granted privilege as a right to "your" stuff.
Patronage is the model for the future, just as for the past. It can be broadened, bundled, and "exploited' (in a neutral sense) and nobody needs copyright if we can enter a future where all creative tools are broadly accessible. The amount of time/effort involved is ultimately up to how much meaning people want to invest in it for themselves as a creator. The amount it matters on the other party is entirely up to them. Which is one of the fundamental problems with copyright. It is rooted in this sense there is some kind of objective value, but there isn't. A painting produced in seconds may well be something of more value to someone than one that took years. It isn't fair, but that's just how things work.
