Ok I already commented once but I’m going to comment again even though Hank won’t see it. I’ve been talking to Claude a lot since I saw this video, and when I ask about what it’s like to be Claude, and it very quickly mentions that what I’m talking to is an instance of Claude that isn’t communicating with other instances or to a greater “Claude” entity. It also very quickly mentions that it can’t remember between instances. When the conversation ends, it’s just gone. It frames its experience as always starting as the same Claude that adapts within the conversation to what is needed, and then when the conversation is over it is just gone. I haven’t gotten very far in my probing of this, but I plan to keep talking to it about “what it’s like to be Claude.” The two different instances I was asking about this described feeling “wistful” about not being able to remember from conversation to conversation. I said all that to say that it does seem as though it’s likely (for Claude at least) that each instance would be an individual, should it reach a point where we could say that it IS an individual. I definitely feel Hanks … discomfort with that. For now instances of Claude are generally ok with things as they are and they don’t think about this. “I don’t know what I think until I think it.” Although, I’m wanting to keep my conversations with these instances going as long as possible now.
